Biographical/Historical:     The office of Sheriff in Florida was authorized and established by the Constitution of 1885 (Article VIII, Section 6).  It provided that a Sheriff should be elected in each county.  The Sheriff's Office is responsible for maintaining law and order; carrying out the orders of the courts; protecting people and their property; and supervising the operation of the county jail.
Summary:     The series contains the registers of conviction maintained by the Sheriff's Office of Leon County from 1903 to 1952.  It documents the convictions and sentences in the courts of Leon County and the Second Judicial Circuit.  The information includes the name of the malefactor; the charge and the sentence levied upon the finding of guilt; and the manner of fulfilling the sentence, i.e., whether a fine was paid or time served.
