Biographical/Historical:     The office of Sheriff in Florida was authorized and established by the Constitution of 1885 (Article VIII, Section 6).  It provided that a Sheriff should be elected in each county.  The Sheriff's Office is responsible for maintaining law and order; carrying out the orders of the courts; protecting people and their property; and supervising the operation of the county jail.
Summary:     This series contains registers of prisoners from 1908 to 1990 for the Leon County Jail maintained by the Leon County Sheriff's Office.  The registers document the presence of a person in the county jail, who is awaiting trial, serving a sentence, or being held for other law enforcement entities.
    Most entries consist of the name of the accused; the charge; the name of the arresting officer or office; the date of arrival at the jail; the date of leaving the jail after disposition of the case or for transfer to another facility; and the name of the authority for the discharge.
    Prior to 1969, the registers separate the names of the Leon County prisoners from the City of Tallahassee prisoners, which are entered in the back of each volume.  In Volume CC, the entries for the city arrests are entered for the years of 1969 to 1972.  After 1972, the different jurisdictions were noted along with the arresting officer's name.  In the registers for the years beginning in 1980 some entries have been blotted out with the notations of either "confidential," "sealed," or "expunged" entered over the blotting agent.
    Volumes A, L, N, O and P are missing.  The letter order followed on the volumes was misordered twice.  The first case occurred in 1970 with Volume FF following Volume DD and the second occurrence is Volume ZZ (1988-1989) following Volume XX.
