Biographical/Historical:     When Florida became a state in 1845, the General Assembly established the Circuit Court system.  The Circuit Courts assumed the duties of the Superior Courts.  Santa Rosa County, established in 1842 on the Gulf coast in northwest Florida, is part of the First Judicial Circuit.
    The Circuit Courts originally had exclusive jurisdiction in all cases in equity, also in all cases at law, not heard by inferior courts, and in all cases involving the legality of any tax, assessment, or toll; of all actions involving the titles or boundaries of real estate; and of all criminal cases not heard by inferior courts.  The Circuit Court also had final appellate jurisdiction in all civil and criminal cases arising in the County Court; and appellate jurisdiction of matters arising before County Judges pertaining to probate, estate, or interests of minors.
Summary:     This collection consists of the witness and juror payroll lists of the First Circuit Court of Santa Rosa County from 1883 to 1920. The payroll lists include the names of state witnesses or jurors, the amount paid, the date, days allowed, mileage allowed, the case title, and the case disposition.
