Biographical/Historical:     When Florida became a state in 1845, the General Assembly established the Circuit Court system.  The Circuit Courts assumed the duties of the Superior Courts.  Hernando County, established in 1843 on the Gulf coast of Florida, was originally part of the Sixth Judicial Circuit.  In 1893, the Legislature made Hernando County part of the Fifth Judicial Circuit (Ch. 4227, Laws).
The Circuit Courts originally had exclusive jurisdiction in all cases in equity, also in all cases at law, not heard by inferior courts, and in all cases involving the legality of any tax, assessment, or toll; of all actions involving the titles or boundaries of real estate; and of all criminal cases not heard by inferior courts.  The Circuit Court also had final appellate jurisdiction in all civil and criminal cases arising in the County Court; and appellate jurisdiction of matters arising before County Judges pertaining to probate, estate, or interests of minors.
Summary:     This series contains eight sample case files from 1881 to 1899 of the Circuit Court of Hernando County.  The sample cases reflect cases heard before the earlier 6th Judicial Circuit and the later 5th Judicial Circuit for Hernando County, Florida.
