Biographical/Historical:     In 1879 the state of Georgia began providing pensions for the Confederate soldiers of Georgia.  In 1891 the laws were changed to include the widows of the soldiers.  The Georgia Division of Confederate Pensions and Records was created by the Georgia Legislature in 1939 (Ga. L. 1939, p. 110) to handle all aspects of Confederate pensions in the state.  In 1960, the year the last pension was received, the act was repealed and all of the Confederate pension records were transferred to the Georgia Department of Archives and History.  The powers of the Division of Confederate Pensions and Records were transferred to the Georgia Department of Veterans Service.
Summary:     This series consists of microfilm of the Georgia Confederate soldier and widow pension records from 1879 to 1960.  The Application for Soldier's Pension provides the county name, the name of the soldier applying for pension, rank, company, regiment, and length of service.  It also includes when and where the soldier was born, wounded, captured and surrendered.  The Application for Pension by a Widow provides the same information as above and, in addition, the widow's name, county and city of residence, whether remarried, and if the couple had previously been paid a pension.
Rolls 493 through 498 appear to be supplements to the counties.
