Summary:     This microfilm publication contains the compiled service records of volunteer soldiers in the 1st Florida Infantry Regiment who served during the war with Spain.
Proceeding the jacket-envelopes for individual soldiers are envelopes containing record-of-events cards for the field and staff offices and for each company.  These cards are abstracts of information found on muster rolls and regimental returns, which indicate the stations, movements, and activities of the regiment from the time of its organization to its disbandment.
A typical compiled service record consists of a jacket-envelope for each soldier containing (1) card abstracts of entries relating to the soldier as found primarily in original muster rolls and regimental returns and occasionally in such other records as medical and assignment cards, and (2) originals of any papers relating solely to the individual soldier, such as enlistment papers, discharge papers, requests for leaves of absence and furloughs, accounts of payment and clothing issued, and court-martial orders.  There are also jacket-envelopes used as cross-references for names of Volunteers that appear in the records under more than one spelling.
Card abstracts for an individual soldier show his rank; the company in which he served; when, where, and how long he served; and any payment due him, either as salary or compensation.  In addition, abstracts of descriptive lists give the soldier's age, physical description, date and place of birth, residence, occupation, marital status, and name of next of kin.  Medical card abstracts show any type of illness incurred, length of illness, where the soldier recuperated or was transferred to, and the date of return to active duty.
Seven sets of personal papers follow the jacket-envelopes containing compiled service records.  These personal papers are arranged alphabetically and apparently were gathered by the War Department to be interfiled among the compiled service records but, for a number of reasons, never were.  The usual reason was that information on the papers was insufficient or contained discrepancies and could not be positively identified with any soldier for whom there was a compiled service record.  Another reason was that the nature of the information provided in the papers did not justify establishing a compiled service record.
