Biographical/Historical:     State censuses were first compiled in 1845 and then every ten years after until 1945.  The state census supplemented the federal census carried out at the end of each decade.  The fifth census was authorized in 1885 (Chap. 3571, Laws).  The Secretary of State was assigned to coordinate the enumeration done by county Tax Assessors or their deputies and to record the findings. The state census was abolished in 1949 (Senate Joint Resolution #46, 1949).  The federal census has since served as the only census record of Florida.
Summary:     This series contains the returns of the fifth state census of Florida conducted in 1885.  It contains only the enumeration of the citizens of Leon County.  The information recorded includes the name, age, sex, and race of those persons enumerated.  The enumeration is segregated by race. This series also contains an alphabetical index that lists the names and ages of black males over the age of 21.
