Summary:     This series contains the 1870 federal census of Florida. The compiled information was gathered for the year ending June 1, 1870. These records include four schedules: agriculture, industry, mortality, and social statistics. Also included is the population schedule for Leon County, as well as duplicates of Leon County's census records for agriculture, industry, and mortality.

Agriculture--the schedule on agriculture lists individual farms under the name of the owner or manager. Additional information includes the size and value of the farm, the quantity and estimated worth of equipment, crops, livestock, and other farm products, and the average wages paid for labor. The value of annual farm production is estimated. Each county's totals are listed separately on a recapitulation sheet.

Industry-- the schedule on industry states the name of the company and the products it manufactured. It also records the annual rate of production for each company, invested capital, amount of raw materials used, kind of power used in production (such as steam or water), and the number of laborers employed, categorized according to their sex and age. The total amount of annual wages is estimated.

Mortality-- the mortality schedule names all the persons who died during the year while residing with their family. It records each person's place of dwelling, age, sex, race, occupation, real estate holdings, place of birth, parentage, education, citizenship, and any mental or physical handicaps. It also notes if the person was male, over 21, and had the right to vote.

Social statistics--the schedule of social statistics records general statistics for each county on real estate values, libraries, colleges and schools, annual taxes, average wages, pauperism, newspapers and periodicals, religion, and crime.
