Summary:
This series contains the 1880 federal census of Florida. The compiled information was gathered for the year ending May 31, 1880. It is broken down into five schedules: population; agriculture; defective, dependent, and delinquent classes; manufactures; and mortality.
Population--this schedule includes the name and age of individuals, their street and house number, relationship to the head of the family, month of birth if born within the year, sex, race, birthplace, occupation, marital status, whether married within the year, whether temporarily or permanently disabled, whether crippled, maimed, or deformed, number of months unemployed during census year, whether deaf, dumb, blind, or insane, whether able to read and write, whether attended school within the year, birthplaces of mother and father, and whether father and mother were of foreign birth.
Agriculture--this schedule names the persons who owned, rented, or operated farms in Florida. It provides information on the value and size of the farm, the cost of fences and fertilizers, annual wages, periods labor employed, amount of grasslands, livestock, crops, and other farm products. Total farm production for the year is estimated.
Defective, dependent, and delinquent classes--this schedule lists the insane, mentally impaired, deaf-mutes, and blind residents of the county. It provides the hometown of each person along with the history of their physical and/or mental impairments and the institutions where they received treatment. Some counties also set forth information on homeless children, convicted criminals, paupers and indigents. The roll of homeless children notes if they were legitimate, abandoned by their parents, or orphaned. Criminal offenses are also recorded, as are physical and mental deficiencies. Convicted criminals of the county are named along with their offenses and the length and nature of their sentences. Paupers and indigents are listed with their means of support, the reason for their disability, and the status of other family members.
Manufactures--this schedule of manufactures states the name of the company, goods produced, capital invested, the age, sex, wages and hours of laborers, months in operation, wages and hours of laborers, months in operation, power and equipment used, and annual production capacity. The schedule is broken down by county into the following categories: 1) general industries, 2) flour and grist mills - cheese, butter, and condensed milk factories, 3) lumber mills and saw-mills - brick yards and tile works, 4) agricultural implements, 5) slaughtering and meat-packing - salt works.
Mortality--this schedule names all persons who died during the year while residing with their family. Information on each individual includes age, sex, race, marital status, parents' countries of origin, place of birth, occupation, month in which they died, cause of death, length of county residency, where disease was contracted, and name of attending physician.
