Biographical/Historical:     Daniel Robert "Bob" Graham was the thirty-eighth Governor of Florida, serving two terms from January 2, 1979 to January 3, 1987. Graham was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1966 and then to the state Senate in 1970.


    Special Assistant Angel Gonzalez chaired the Commission on Hispanic Affairs and was involved with the Governor's Council on Indian Affairs and the Commission on Veterans' Affairs. The Commission on Hispanic Affairs was responsible for investigating problems and concerns of Florida citizens of Hispanic origin. The Governor's Council on Indian Affairs was established in 1974 to advise the Governor on policies that might impact the rights and interests of Florida's diverse Indian populations. The Commission on Veterans' Affairs' served as a liaison between the state and veterans' organizations within the state. The commission was composed of nine commissioners appointed by the Governor, who served as an advisory council to the Department of Veteran's Affairs.
Summary:     This series consists of subject files documenting Angel Gonzalez's involvement with the Commission on Hispanic Affairs, the Governor's Council on Indian Affairs, and the Commission on Veterans' Affairs.  Included are correspondence and memoranda sent to Gonzalez regarding the Florida Hispanic community, as well as meeting agendas, minutes, publications, and reports pertaining to the Florida Commission on Veterans' Affairs and the Florida Governor's Council on Indian Affairs. Also included are publications from the Seminole, Miccosukee, and Creek tribes and the Governor's Interstate Indian Council Annual Conference. Other topics include the creation of the Department of Veteran's Affairs, recommendations for the Florida Vietnam Era Veterans' Memorial design and site location, state recognition of Florida Indian tribes, and the Commission on State-Tribunal Relations
