Biographical/Historical:     The Senate is the upper house of the state legislature.  It is composed of one Senator from each of Florida's forty districts (Ch. 10.103FS).  Senators must be at least twenty-one years of age, be electors and residents of their districts, and have resided in the state for at least two years prior to election.  Senators serve four-year terms (Art. III, Sec. 1, 15, 1968 Constitution).
    The presiding officer of the Senate is the President.  From 1865 to 1889, the Lieutenant Governor served as ex officio President of the Senate, casting only a deciding vote in the event of a tie. Until 1968, the Senate President was first in line of gubernatorial succession.  The Secretary of the Senate is the recording officer and prepares the Journal of Proceedings.  In addition to its legislative duties, the Senate confirms the Governor's appointments to various councils, boards, and commissions.
Summary:     This series contains cassette tapes and compact disc recordings of the Senate Committee on Banking and Insurance since 1995.  The cassette tapes and compact disc document the proposed legislation considered by the committee dealing with financial institutions and insurance matters. The tapes and compact disc are not transcribed, and not all tapes are indexed. This series also contains:  the Senate Select Committee on Gaming (1993-1994);  the Legislative Working Group for Residual Markets;  the Senate Workman's Compensation Workgroup (2003);  the Joint Select Committee on Worker's Compensation Rating (2003);  the Select Committee on Automobile Insurance PIP/Reform (2003);  the Joint Select Committee on Hurricane Insurance (2005);  and the Windstorm Mitigation Study Commission (2007).
