Summary:     This series contains the registers of vessels at the Key West Quarantine and Maritime Sanitation Station from 1885 to 1898.  Upon the formation of the State Board of Health in 1889, the state took over control of the quarantine stations in an effort to establish a consistent approach to the quarantine practice.  Maritime quarantine was a major public health activity in the early years of the Board.
The registers contain the following information for each vessel arriving at Key West:  date of arrival, nationality, class, name, master, tonnage, number of crew and passengers, where from and destination, ports touched within the past ninety days, cargo, ballast, bill of health, any sickness, and sanitary conditions of the vessels and ports.  The first register was maintained by the Monroe County Board of Health prior to the formation of the State Board of Health.
