Summary:     This series contains the subject files of the State Board of Health.  This material appears to have been collected by Dr. Wilson T. Sowder, State Health Officer, 1945-1974.  A few items fall outside the dates of the State Board of Health's official existence as an entity (1889-1969).  The bulk of the material focuses on the years 1901 to 1945 and documents the history of the State Board of Health and public health services in Florida.
The files contain incoming and outgoing correspondence, memoranda, reports, newspaper clippings, and photographs.  Some topics covered include communicable diseases, quarantine, health legislation, Seminole Indians, and the administration of the Board's programs.
Some of the correspondence of the first State Health Officer, Dr. Joseph Y. Porter, is found throughout the series.  Also included in the series is a book containing articles written by Dr. Porter and reports which Dr. Porter issued to the federal government concerning the 1875 and 1878 Key West yellow fever epidemics.  The articles, including "Looking Backward Over Fifty Years of Health Work in Florida," originally appeared in the Journal of the Florida Medical Association.
