Summary:     This series contains incoming correspondence to Dr. Joseph Y. Porter pertaining to the yellow fever epidemic in Jacksonville during the summer and fall of 1888.  Some of the correspondence is from the Jacksonville Auxiliary Sanitary Association which was established by the citizenry at the urging of local physicians to provide general relief and information about the epidemic. Correspondence is also from private citizens, merchants, local and out-of-state doctors, and county boards of health.
As a visitor in Jacksonville in 1888, Dr. Porter had diagnosed the first case of yellow fever of that summer's ensuing epidemic. The Duval County Board of Health asked him to provide professional assistance.  All medical and relief measures were coordinated under Dr. Porter as the Surgeon in Charge of Government Relief Measures.
