Summary:     The series contains furloughs for patients from 1894 to 1922 at the Florida State Hospital and its predecessor, the Florida Hospital for the Insane.  Furloughs were issued to patients when hospital staff felt the patient was recovered sufficiently to be sent home on a trial basis.  The furloughs were issued for one-year periods and could be renewed by the custodian of the patient if it were needed. The furlough was signed by a family member or someone willing to take responsibility for the care of the patient.  The person who signed the furlough agreed to provide medical care, food, shelter, and clothing for the patient and agreed to pay any transportation costs if the patient had to return to the Florida State Hospital. The records include the furloughs, furlough lists, and miscellaneous correspondence.  It should be noted that there are no records for the years 1895, 1897, and 1900.
