Biographical/Historical:     The Governor's Coordinating Task Force on Migrant and Rural Poor was established on April 19, 1971 by a directive from Governor Reubin Askew.  The Task Force compiled data gathered from existing state agencies providing services to rural populations, supplemented by information provided from county and private agencies.  The data was then used to mobilize existing resources in Florida to begin a coordinated assault on conditions contributing to the poverty of seasonal farm workers within the state.  Information was gathered on a wide range of subjects:  migrant camps were investigated, along with health and sanitation services; food and nutrition services, including the Food Stamp program, were urged to expand; Head Start programs and education incentives were introduced, ranging from basic to higher level education.  Other programs being evaluated dealt with occupational safety, legal services, immunization, Medicaid, unemployment compensation, and family planning.  The Task's Force's goal was to establish a long range plan for better treatment of Florida's agricultural workers.  Governor Askew was presented with the final report from the Task Force Committee on August 8, 1972.
