Summary:     The series contains the administrative files of Richard H. Simpson, member of the State Road Dept. and the State Road Board, from 1951 to 1956.  Simpson was appointed Chairman of the Board by Governor Dan McCarty.  Most of the files contain correspondence to and from Simpson or reports on the various aspects of the Department's activities and projects during 1953.  There is also some correspondence concerning the abuse of convicts and their labor at prison road camps.  In addition, there is correspondence relating to the alleged corruption of the Department under Simpson's leadership.  Simpson was cleared of the allegations and restored to office by Governor LeRoy Collins.
The reports are concerned with personnel, operations, the use of particular materials (e.g. concrete for highway paving), the establishment of uniform traffic control signs, the traffic and income of the East Las Olas Boulevard Tunnel and S. E. 17th S. Bridge in Ft. Lauderdale, and audits of contracts.  Information concerning the construction of the Jacksonville Expressway, the Lower Tampa Bay Bridge, and the Florida Turnpike is included.  Audit reports for the State Road Depart. covering the years 1951 to 1953 are also included.
