Biographical/Historical:     The Judicial Council of Florida was created in 1953 (Ch. 28062, Laws) and consisted of justices, lawyers, and laymen appointed by the Governor.  The Council made a continuous study and survey of the organization, practice, and procedure of the court system; compiled, analyzed, and published statistics showing court work; investigated criticisms and suggestions from any source relating to the administration of justice; and recommended to the Legislature any changes in the judiciary.  The Council was abolished in 1980 and its duties were transferred to the Dept. of Legal Affairs (Ch. 80-320, Laws, 1980).
Summary:     The series contains the records of the Judicial Council of Florida from 1953 to 1989.  It consists of correspondence, audits, annual reports, budgets, minutes of meetings, reports, newspaper clippings, publications, and other materials used by the Council during its administration.  Among the subjects are constitutional revision, capital punishment, sentencing, selection and tenure of judges, improvements in court reporting, juvenile courts, public defenders, legal services to the indigent, the District Courts of Appeal, and judges' retirement and salaries.
