Biographical/Historical:
Summary:     This series consists of the homestead applications submitted to the State Land Office in accordance with the Florida homestead laws of 1881. The law required homesteaders to file applications to obtain the right to purchase the lands they occupied (Chapter 3324, Laws of Florida). The applications consist of sworn affidavits by settlers testifying to their settlement, cultivation, and improvement of public lands for a period of more than three years. The application includes the applicant name, lot size, location, and land improvements. The records also include applications by railroad and canal companies to purchase lands designated for internal improvements.
