Terms Governing Use:
Biographical/Historical:     Executive orders reflect the routine appointments, transfers, and disqualifications of appointed State judges and attorneys, and the sometimes-controversial reprieves of criminals. Governors also issue executive orders to establish states of emergency, create committees or commissions, and to address management and administrative issues. Proclamations are official announcements or declarations made by the governor to commemorate a specific time for the purpose of raising awareness about an issue, or celebrating milestones. In some cases, the governor may present a courtesy letter in lieu of a proclamation that acknowledges a particular event or cause.

Summary:     This series contains draft copies and originals of governors' executive orders and proclamations. The executive orders date from 1936-1977 and 2002-2011, and the proclamations date from 1971-1999 and 2001-2013. Originals are interfiled with copies throughout the series. This series also contains supplemental materials including correspondence, court orders, affidavits and newspaper clippings that relate to the issuance of the executive orders and proclamations. Although this series does not contain every order or proclamation issued by the governor, all that are included are accompanied by supporting documentation.
