Organization/Arrangement: The two volumes of letters are each divided into letters of recommendation and application.  The letters are arranged by page number rather than chronologically.

Summary:     This series contains letters of application and reference for those persons seeking employment as deputy surveyors and clerks in the office of the Surveyor General for the Florida District during the period 1824-1844.  Some letters were written by prominent politicians of the time, e.g. Andrew Jackson, Sam Houston, and Richard K. Call.  The letters were bound into volumes at some time without regard to chronological dates of composition.  A second group of application/reference letters was submitted to the General Land Office in 1858.
