Biographical/Historical:     The Division of State Lands under the Dept. of Natural Resources was created in 1979 (Ch. 79-255, Laws).  It took over the duties and responsibilities of the Bureau of Coastal and Land Boundaries and the Bureau of State Lands, both of the Division of Resource Management in the Dept. of Natural Resources.  Under the Florida Environmental Reorganization Act of 1993, the Division of State Lands was transferred intact to the Dept. of Environmental Protection (Ch. 93-213, Laws).  The Division of State Lands performs all staff duties and functions related to acquisitions, administration, and disposition of state lands, the title to which are or will be vested in the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund.      In 1988 the Florida Legislature passed the Magnetic Levitation Demonstration Project Act, which established a "centrally coordinated permitting and planning process for the location, construction, operation, and maintenance of a magnetic levitation demonstration project" within Florida (Ch. 88-402, Laws).  The act required that specified state and local agencies prepare reports on the impact of the proposed project and that a hearing officer conduct hearings on the proposal.  The Japanese-financed company, Maglev Transit, Inc. later became the company charged with developing the proposal for a 14-mile magnetic levitation train system running from Orlando International Airport to the International Drive tourist area in Orlando.  The project was abandoned in late 1994 due to financial problems and disagreement among the business partners.
Summary:     This collection consists of the records of the Dept. of Environmental Protection's Division of State Lands regarding the proposed magnetic levitation train.  The papers focus on the environmental impact of the train and consist of correspondence, hearing files, reports, photographs, maps, and other related materials.  The collection includes materials created by other state and local government agencies, most notably the Dept. of Transportation and the Division of Administrative Hearings; Maglev Transit, Inc.; and lawyers representing the above and other interested parties.
