Biographical/Historical:     Thomas Orman (1799-1880) was a sugar trader in New Orleans, Louisiana, before moving to Apalachicola in 1834. Prior to this move, he met and married Sarah Love Trippe in Marianna and had one son, William, in 1830. In Apalachicola, Orman worked as a merchant and minor labor farmer, primarily focused on the cotton trade. The Orman House, now a Florida state park, was constructed in 1838 and originally served as a second home to Thomas and Sarah, who primarily lived at Owl Creek Plantation, an active labor farm, until Owl Creek burned to the ground and necessitated their permanent relocation to the Apalachicola house. Their son, William, studied law at Yale University and later served in the Confederate Army, achieving the rank of lieutenant before his ultimate surrender under General Johnston in 1865.

Summary:     The series contains the correspondence and personal papers of various members of the Orman family in Apalachicola. The personal papers consist largely of deeds, check stubs, and receipts. Also included is a ledger maintained at the Orman general store in Apalachicola, circa 1853, which documents the purchases of the inhabitants of the city and surrounding region. Other ledgers expanding upon this type of information remain in the possession of Orman descendants.
