Terms Governing Use:
Biographical/Historical:     The Bureau of Beaches and Shores, under the Division of Marine Resources, Dept. of Natural Resources, was created in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws).  The Bureau assumed the duties and functions of the Division of Beaches and Shores, State Board of Conservation.  These duties included preserving, managing, protecting, and regulating the use of the coastal resources of Florida.  The Bureau became the Division of Beaches and Shores, Dept. of Natural Resources, in 1982 (Ch. 82-144, Laws).
Summary:     This series contains the variance case files of the Bureau of Beaches and Shores from 1970 to 1976.  In order to limit shore erosion and unguided beach development, legislation was passed in 1970 (Ch. 70-231, Laws) to prohibit any excavation or construction within 50 feet of the line of mean high water at any riparian coastal location fronting the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic coast shoreline in Florida.  This series documents the Bureau's activities in enforcing this legislation.  The Bureau was authorized to issue a waiver or variance of the setback requirements.
The records include permits, blueprints, maps, surveys, site plans, photographs, affidavits, reports, correspondence, and memoranda related to the variance cases handled by the Bureau.
