Biographical/Historical:     Reubin O'Donovan Askew, the thirty-seventh Governor of Florida, served from 1971 to 1979.  He served in the state House and Senate before being elected governor in 1970, defeating incumbent Claude Kirk.  Askew was reelected in 1974, becoming the first governor in state history to be elected for a second successive full term.

Askew was primarily involved in tax reform, especially in the increase of homestead exemption, and passage of the "Sunshine Amendment" which called for full financial disclosure by public officials and candidates.  Askew ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1984.

Dr. Claud Anderson became Askew's Education Coordinator in 1971. Dr. Anderson received his PhD in Sociology from Wayne State University. He was the first African American to hold this position in Florida. Before becoming the Administrative Assistant for Education Affairs, Dr. William Maloy held the position.

The 1970s were a tumultuous time for education in the state of Florida. Between desegregation initiatives, busing, budget cuts, and the institution of Daylight Savings Time, Askew and his cabinet handled a wide range of educational issues.

Summary:     This series contains the correspondence of Governor Reubin O'Donovan Askew's Education Coordinator from 1968 to 1978. The records include incoming and outgoing correspondence relating to education, including citizen letters, petitions, educational programming, budget, the public university system, and public relations. Beginning in 1971, the Education Coordinator was Dr. Claud Anderson. The series also includes correspondence for Dr. William Maloy, the Administrative Assistant for Educational Affairs, and Dr. Marshall Harris, Special Assistant on Education. Some of the correspondence dates from Governor Claude Kirk's Administration. Although much of the correspondence was addressed to the Governor, it was answered by the Education Coordinator.
