Biographical/Historical:     The 1868 Constitution of Florida created the State Board of Education (Article VIII, Section 9). Its members were the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Secretary of State and the Attorney General. The State Board headed the Department of Public Instruction. Under the 1885 Constitution (Article XII, Section 3), the State Board consisted of the Governor, the Secretary of State, the Attorney General, the State Treasurer and the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and it headed the State Department of Education. The 1968 Constitution (Article IX, Section 2) reformed the Board to consist of the Governor and Cabinet members, and it became head of the Department of Education.

    The State Board of Education is the chief policy making and coordinating body of public education. It determines, adopts and prescribes the policies, rules, regulations and standards required by law or needed to improve the state system of education. It manages the school lands held by the state and administers the state school funds.

Summary:     This series contains the supplemental minutes and agenda of the State Board of Education from 1974 to 1994. The record types include minutes and agenda as well as other meeting material such as reports, memoranda, petitions, resolutions, fiscal reports and capital outlay reports. This series documents the activities of the Board in determining public school policies and expenditures. Minutes of the Board from 1869 to 1973 are in Series S252.
