Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the Cancer Control and Research Advisory Council in 1979 (Chapter 98-305, Laws).  The council's duties include advising the Governor, Legislature, and state agencies on cancer issues, developing the state's cancer plan, preparing position statements on cancer-related legislation, and allocating available funds for cancer research and demonstration projects. The council consists of 35 members:  33 appointed by the Governor, one by the President of the Senate, and one by the Speaker of the House.  Members serve four-year terms and represent public and private agencies, professional associations, cancer centers, universities, and consumers.
In 1998 the Florida Legislature created within the council the Florida Prostate Cancer Task Force (Chapter 98-305, Laws).  The Task Force included 18 members appointed by the Governor, the President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House.  The goal of the group was to increase public awareness and education of prostate cancer. It also made recommendations for increasing prostate cancer research in Florida, emphasized early detection and treatment, and identified insurance-related deficiencies.
The Task Force was created for a two-year term ending June 2000, with recommendations due to the Governor and Legislature by January 15, 2000.  Both the task force and the council reside in the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, Inc. at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Summary:     This series is comprised of four volumes consisting of the Prostate Cancer Task Force's findings and subsequent report.  The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute at the University of South Florida in Tampa facilitated the primary research resulting in the findings and report.
Within the report are statistics and findings compiled by the Task Force relating to prostate cancer causation, treatment, and public awareness.  Much of the material originated from appointed membersof the Task Force's three subcommittees on education, insurance, and research. Among the appendices are surveys of existing cancer treatment programs, articles and evaluations of comparable laws and statutes in other states, and evaluations of cancer awareness aids.  The report also includes recommendations for increasing prostate cancer research in Florida and emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment.
