Biographical/Historical: ****DEACCESSIONED****Florida State University is located in Tallahassee, Florida. The institution was chartered in 1851 and has been state-assisted since 1857.  It operated under several different names until 1909, when it became Florida State College for Women.  In 1947, the name was changed to Florida State University and the institution was made coeducational.  It is part of the State University System which is part of the Division of Universities in the Dept. of Education.  The university president is appointed by the Board of Regents.
    J. Stanley Marshall served as President of Florida State University from 1970 to 1976.  He was born in Cheswick, Pennsylvania on January 27, 1923.  He majored in science education and received his B.S. degree in 1947 from Slippery Rock Teachers College.  He received his M.S. in 1950 and Ph.D. in 1956, both from Syracuse University.  From 1947 to 1957, he served as a faculty member and administrator at various colleges in New York State.  Dr. Marshall came to Florida State University in 1958 as a science education professor.  He served as the Head of the Dept. of Science Education and Dean of the College of Education prior to his appointment as Acting President in June 1969.  He was appointed as President in June, 1970 and resigned in 1976.  His administration was marked by political turbulence and student protests during the Vietnam era.
