Biographical/Historical:     On 1 January 1979, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed 1979 as the International Year of the Child. Planning and preparations began in 1978, when UNESCO Secretary General Kurt Waldheim requested each head of state to appoint a commission to study and report on children's conditions in their respective nations. The purpose of the proclamation and commission work was to draw attention to problems that affected children throughout the world, including malnutrition and lack of access to education.

In the United States, President Gerald Ford established a National Commission to examine the condition of America's children. President Ford also requested that each state's governor appoint a coordinator to develop an International Year of the Child program in their state. Florida Governor Bob Graham appointed a coordinator, who then selected a statewide committee to plan activities for the International Year of the Child in Florida.

Summary:     This series contains the records of the State Coordinating Committee on the International Year of the Child in Florida. The records document the work of the committee as well as other participating agencies such as the Florida League of Women Voters, the Florida Chapter of the United Nations, the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, and the Florida Department of Education. Types of materials include committee member correspondence, newspaper clippings, copies of completed Questionnaires for Report to the President, pamphlets, a scrapbook, and activity reports. The scrapbook consists of pamphlets, programs, and other printed material.
