The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:   The Dept. of Education was created in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws). It is headed by the Commissioner of Education who is the chief educational officer for the state.  It assumed the responsibilities of the State Dept. of Education (Ch. 19355, Laws) and its predecessor, the Dept. of Public Instruction (Ch. 1686, Laws). Since 1869, these education departments have supervised public education, kindergarten to graduate, in Florida.  It carries out the policies and duties authorized by law or by the State Board of Education.  The Dept. of Education has five divisions:  Public Schools, Vocational Education, Community Colleges, Universities, and Blind Services.
    The Office of Public Information is headed by a Director who reports to the Commissioner of Education.  The Office collects, coordinates, prepares, and releases all public information material related to the Commissioner of Education, the Dept. of Education, and its Divisions.
Summary:     This series contains the subject files of the Office of Public Information Office from 1966 to 1986.  The bulk of the material is related to the administration of Commissioner Ralph D. Turlington from 1974 to 1985.  Included are subject files, reference files, correspondence, press releases, newspaper clippings, public information materials, newsletters, publications and media materials. Some major subjects covered are Commissioner of Education Floyd T. Christian's 1974 indictment and resignation, functional literacy, and state-wide testing.
