Biographical/Historical Note:     On May 15, 1911, the State Building Commission was formed to construct a building to house the Railroad Commission and the Supreme Court (Ch. 6131, Laws).  The Commission was dissolved in 1913 when the building was completed.  It was the first building constructed for use by state government other than the Capitol.  The structure was known as the Supreme Court Building until the Court moved into its current building in 1948.  The building was then named the Whitfield Building in honor of Supreme Court Justice James B. Whitfield.  It housed the offices of the Commissioner of Agriculture, the Secretary of State, and the Comptroller.  The Whitfield Building was demolished in 1979.
