Biographical/Historical Note:     The Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) licenses businesses and individuals doing business in certain professions or occupations in the State of Florida, ranging from real estate agents, architects, hotels, restaurants, veterinarians and accountants to contractors and cosmetologists.  In addition, the department is responsible for the regulation of non medical professions, including child and farm labor.  DBPR also works to locate and eliminate unlicensed activity.

DBPR was formed by the 1993 merger of the Departments of Business Regulation and Professional and Occupational Regulation.  The Department's mission is to protect the public's health, safety, and welfare through the regulation of those professions or occupational groups and businesses as prescribed in the Florida Statutes.  Section 20.165, Florida Statutes, establishes the Department of Business and Professional Regulation.  Various state laws that are referenced in the related program profiles authorize the Department’s programs.

DBPR is headed by a Secretary appointed by the Governor.  The Secretary serves at the pleasure of the Governor and is subject to Senate confirmation.  DBPR is composed of ten divisions and one commission--the Division of Certified Public Accounting, the Division of Administration, the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, the Division of Hotels and Restaurants, the Division of Land Sales, Condominiums and Mobile Homes, the Division of Pari-mutual Wagering, the Division of Professions, the Division of Real Estate, the Division of Regulation, the Division of Technology, Licensure and Testing, and the Florida State Boxing Commission.  DBPR is funded by revenues generated from application and licensure fees and collection of tax revenues from the sales of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products and those taxes collected at pari-mutuel events.
