The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical Note:     The Department of Law Enforcement was created in 1967 (Ch. 67-2207, Laws of Florida) as the Bureau of Law Enforcement, combining the Florida Sheriff's Bureau, the State Board of Health's Narcotics Bureau, and the criminal law investigative duties of the Attorney General.  The Bureau became the Dept. of Law Enforcement in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws); was reorganized in 1974 as the Dept. of Criminal Law Enforcement (Ch. 74-386, Laws); and was renamed the Dept. of Law Enforcement in 1978 (Ch. 78-347, Laws).  The Department investigates criminal law violations; conducts investigations into the execution and enforcement of laws relating to organized crime, racketeering, vice, rioting or inciting to riot, and insurrection; investigates the misconduct of public officials and employees and members of public authorities that are subject to removal or suspension by the Governor.  It maintains a Criminal Justice Information System which records and transmits information on criminals for use by government agencies.  It provides investigative support for local and state law enforcement agencies, certifies training schools, and sets standards for criminal justice enforcement officers.
