The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical Note:     The Board of Immigration was created in 1877 (Ch. 3046, Laws of Florida) to encourage immigration and the rapid settlement of the vacant lands in Florida through advertisement, lectures, and enticements such as special rates for immigrant transportation.  Its members were the Attorney General, Comptroller, and Commissioner of Lands and Immigration.  In 1879 (Ch. 3151, Laws), the membership of the Board changed to the Governor, Comptroller and the Commissioner of Lands and Immigration.  The Commissioner of Lands and Immigration served as President of the Board and head of the Bureau of Immigration.  It was abolished in 1891 (Ch. 4057, Laws).
