The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical Note:     The Water Management Districts were created as flood control districts from 1949 to 1961 (Ch. 25209, 25214, Laws of Florida, 1949; Ch. 29790, Laws, 1955; Ch. 61-497, Laws, 1961) and were formally renamed in 1963 (Ch. 63-336, Laws).  The districts were under the control of the State Board of Conservation's Division of Water Resources, then passed to the Department of Natural Resources in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws).  In 1975, they were transferred to the Department of Environmental Regulation (Ch. 75-22, Laws) and later to the Department of Environmental Protection.  The boundaries of the five districts were set in 1976 (Ch. 373.069, FS).  Each district is controlled by a nine member governing board.  The districts control the use of water within their boundaries, including the issuance of consumptive use permits, the development of regional water use plans, the declaration of water shortages and the imposition of restrictions, and the implementation of water pollution control functions.
