The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical Note:     The State Board of Education was created under the 1868 Constitution (Article VIII, Section 9).  Its members were the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Secretary of State, and the Attorney General.  The State Board was the head of the Department of Public Instruction.  Under the 1885 Constitution (Article XII, Section 3), the State Board was composed of the Governor, the Secretary of State, the Attorney General, the State Treasurer, and the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and it headed the State Department of Education.  In the 1968 Constitution (Article IX, Section 2), the State Board was reformed to consist of the Governor and the Cabinet members, and it became the head of the Department of Education.
    The State Board of Education is the chief policy making and coordinating body of public education.  It determines, adopts, and prescribes the policies, rules, regulations, and standards required by law or needed to improve the state system of education.  It manages the school lands held by the state and administers the state school funds.
