Title: Letter, January 14, 1861, Mary Y. Holmes, Brockport, to Ellen Call Long, 4 pp., concerning the current political situation and personal matters: ". . . let me tell you how glad I was to hear from the land of flowers and know that one of her daughters at least was right upon the main question of the day. . . I hope no blood will be shed, but fear the matter has gone too far to prevent it. My sympathies I believe are pretty equally divided though as a New Englander it is natural that I should lean to the northward -- still I have many dear friends at the south and cannot bear that we should be at variance. . . I missed you very much after you left the Hotel and began to learn how much my acquaintance with you added to my happiness. I hope we shall meet again sometime . . . I am now busy with "Darkness and Daylight" which is being published in the New York Weekly. . . You don't know how fond I am of writing . . ."
