Three of his sons served with the Confederacy in the Civil War. His youngest son, George Pettus Raney (1845-1911), won election to the state legislature in 1868 and served as the minority leader in the House. He also served as Attorney General and in 1888, Governor Edward A. Perry appointed him as Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court.

Virginia Raney Porter was one of David Greenway Raney's daughters. She married into the Oven family and gave birth to William Oven. Virginia's husband, a priest, moved to Apalachicola in the 1850s. He was the town's first Episcopal priest. They both died from consumption and William Oven's aunt raised him in the Raney family home on Market Street in Apalachicola, Florida.
