	Biographical/Historical:	John George Richards (1799-1876) moved to Florida with his family in the early 1800s, settling in Calhoun County on the outskirts of what is now the city of Wewahitchka. His wife Eliza Porter gave birth to Daniel Thomas in 1825, which may have been the first white birth in Calhoun County. Six weeks later, Eliza died of pneumonia at only 15 years of age. John George and his sons built the first Methodist Church in Wewahitchka, a one-room structure of hewn logs. Daniel Thomas Richards married Cherry Ann Nelson in 1848 and they lived in the fort at Wewahitchka. In the 1850s they moved to Washington County near Econfina Creek and made it their home for many years. Later they moved to Jackson County, south of Marianna, and then to Calhoun County in the 1870s. The Civil War forced Daniel Thomas to leave his wife and young children with no one to manage his farm. He was mustered into the 6th Florida Infantry, Company G on March 11, 1862. While he was gone, Cherry Ann welcomed into their home other young women left with no means of support. These women and children remained together for the duration of the war. Martin LaFayette Richards (1866-1947) was one of Daniel's youngest sons. He married Lula Mozelle Cannon on February 23, 1899, in Calhoun County. Martin was a land owner and farmer there, and he established the first post office at Altha, which he operated out of his home until a building was erected in 1901.
	Summary:	This collection contains photographs of the Richards family of Pensacola, Altha, Wewahitchka, and Calhoun County, Florida, during the second half of the nineteenth century. Images depict various family members including the first nurse in the Pensacola area (Miss Alice Unity Richards), the first Post Master of Alta (Myles Jefferson Richards), and a soldier in the Spanish American War at camp (Obid Richards). Ruth Wills Richards was a school teacher in Calhoun County, and is in several photographs with her pupils.
