Biographical/Historical:     Seaborn D. Harris (b. 1838) joined the Fourth Florida Infantry, Company I, of the Confederate States Army on September 25 1861. He served as a sergeant before advancing to First Lieutenant. He was killed in action at the Battle of Stones River/Murfreesboro on January 2, 1862.

    Florida seceded from the United States in January 1861. By war's end, 15,000 Floridians served in both the Union and Confederate armies, of whom 5,000 were killed. The Fourth Florida Infantry mustered into service on 1 July 1861. It was soon assigned to the Army of Tennessee and fought in several battles of the western theater including Chickamauga, Murfreesboro/Stones River, and the Siege of Jackson. It surrendered in North Carolina in April 1865. The Battle of Stones River/Murfreesboro in Tennessee occurred between December 31, 1862 and January 3, 1863, with over 23,000 casualties.

Summary:     This collection contains the military records of First Lieutenant Seaborn D. Harris of the Fourth Florida Infantry, Company I (CSA). Included are requisitions, muster roll cards, and a letter written to his brother on May 3, 1862 describing conditions in Jacksonville, Florida. There are also some excerpts from the Harris family history and a photograph portrait of Harris.
