Biographical/Historical:     Richard Keith Call served twice as Florida's territorial governor between 1835 and 1844. Years before that, after he began his military service in 1813 in the Creek War, Call met General Andrew Jackson, and he later served as Jackson's aide-de-camp, where they began a lifelong friendship. Call visited Florida with Jackson in 1814 and again in 1821 when Jackson established the new American territorial government there. Call later served as a member of the Legislative Council, delegate to Congress, brigadier general of the West Florida militia, and territorial governor.
Summary:     The single-item collection contains a letter written by Richard Keith Call to an unknown recipient on May 9, 1824. In the letter, Call defends his friend Andrew Jackson against allegations relating to Jackson's controversial marriage to Rachel Donelson. Call provides a lengthy explanation of his understanding of the circumstances surrounding the marriage, clearly demonstrating his close relationship with Jackson.
