Biographical/Historical:     Frederick Preston Cone was born in Benton, Florida, on September 28, 1871. He attended Florida Agricultural College and Jasper Normal College and passed the bar exam in 1892. He became a banker and lawyer in Lake City, Florida. He won election as mayor of Lake City for three terms. Cone also served in the State Senate from 1907-1913 and was President of the Senate in 1911.

In 1936, Cone won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and then defeated Republican E.E. Callaway in the general election. As governor, Cone oversaw the State sponsored exhibit at the New York World's Fair, urged the licensing of drivers to collect funds for the highway patrol, and fought new taxes. After leaving office, Cone returned to Lake City where he again became a banker. He died there on July 18, 1948.

Summary:     This collection includes newspaper clippings that cover the Florida gubernatorial election of 1936. Also included are a radio script and publicity photographs that document Governor Cone's 1937 appearance on a radio program hosted by Emily Post. The appearance was in connection with the publicity efforts of the Citrus Board. The Board has continued to use celebrities as speakers on behalf of Florida citrus products such as orange juice. The collection also includes photographs of Cone and his wife; other images depict Cone as a young man, Cone in the late 1940's, and of his funeral.
