Biographical/Historical:     Mary Louise Leavitt Barcus was born in 1854 in Ohio. She attended college in Indiana and married Jerome N. Barcus (b. 1862) in 1887 in West Virginia. They had at least three children: Helen, born in 1893 in Virginia; George, born in 1895 in Virginia; and May, born in 1900 in West Virginia. Sometime between 1900 and 1907, Jerome Barcus died and Louise moved to Florida.

Around 1907, Louise Barcus lived with her uncle, Arvid P. Curry, in Flamingo, Florida, a settlement of about a dozen families on the southernmost edge of mainland Monroe County. Curry and Barcus became cane growers and had a small store where they sold tobacco and other sundries. Curry also served as the postmaster of Flamingo from 1907 to 1909. By 1910, Barcus had moved to Princeton in Dade County, where she filed a homestead and taught at the town school for three or four years prior to 1912. She also served as the Princeton postmistress and wrote fiction for the Saturday Evening Post and Ladies Home Journal.

Summary:     This collection consists of a journal maintained by Louise Barcus. The journal first contains a list of personal accounts for drug store items. Following the accounts is a section entitled "Reminiscences" and "Cape Sable Notes." When Barcus wrote these notes is unclear, but the events discussed range in date from 1895 to 1912. The notes contain information on the pioneers of Flamingo and Cape Sable (births, deaths, occupations, etc.) and on area events (storms, settlements, etc.).
