Biographical/Historical:     Brothers Roderick Gospero Shaw and James Kirkpatrick Shaw served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. Roderick enlisted in Company G of the First Florida Infantry (the Young Guards) in 1861 and advanced to lieutenant in the Fourth Florida Infantry. James was a soldier in the First Georgia Infantry and later the Fifth Florida Cavalry Battalion.
Summary:     This collection contains fourteen Civil War letters of Roderick Gospero Shaw and James Kirkpatrick Shaw, which are primarily to their sister, Jesse Shaw Smith of Quincy, Florida. There is also one letter and a notated clipping addressed to their uncle, Thomas R. Smith.

    The correspondence begins with the service of Roderick around Pensacola in 1861 and provides information on military activities and family matters. Shaw describes the Confederate attack on Santa Rosa Island in October 1861; the Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River), Tennessee, in December 1862 to January 1863; the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863; and the Atlanta Campaign in 1864. The last letter in the collection is an unfinished one written by Roderick Shaw on May 27, 1864 on the eve of his death in battle. An undated newspaper clipping includes a letter by Washington M. Ives of the Fourth Florida describing Shaw's death, and his premonition of death the night before. The collection also includes a letter from A.M. Harris to T.R. Smith that details the death and burial of Roderick Shaw.

    The single letter from James is dated December 19, 1861 from Winchester (Virginia?) and describes military affairs in the region and camp news concerning his regiment.
