Biographical/Historical:     In 1912, the Florida Education Board set aside funds for introducing agricultural extension work in Florida. Eleven county agents traveled across the state to teach small groups of women about the cultivation and canning of produce. In 1914, the Smith-Lever Extension Act established a cooperative system of extension services in agriculture and home economics and provided funds for a full-time home demonstration agent in each county. The scope of instruction widened to include sewing, nutrition and health, home beautification, poultry and dairying. Club members participated in planning and implementing many community activities including rally days, demonstration tours, and annual county contests. They also assisted in organizing several women's clubs and 4-H clubs.

By 1935, there were 12 organized community clubs in Gadsden County: Concord, Edwards, Federal Roads, Flat Creek, Greensboro, Hardaway, Havana, Mt. Pleasant, New Bethel, Old Mt. Pleasant, Providence, and Sycamore.

Summary:     The collection contains eight scrapbooks of the Gadsden County Home Demonstration Club, as well as one Providence Club scrapbook (1937-1938). The scrapbooks contain minutes, committee reports, correspondence, programs, photographs and newspaper clippings. The scrapbooks reflect the activities of the local community clubs, and of the administrative units responsible for coordinating and overseeing extension work in Florida: The County Council, Quadri-County Council, and the State Council.
