Biographical/Historical:     Brothers Thomas A. and Richard H. Bradford were born in Enfield, North Carolina, and moved to Leon County, Florida in the 1830s to purchase land for plantation agriculture. Thomas Anderson Bradford's Walnut Hill Plantation was situated near Lake Iamonia. Federal census records report that Thomas enslaved 43 Black persons (23 male and 20 female) in 1840, 53 in 1850, and 65 in 1860. Richard H. Bradford's son, Dr. William Henry Bradford, married Sarah "Sallie" Donnelson in 1856.

Summary:     The collection consists of a register recording the names and dates of birth of enslaved Black persons on Thomas A. Bradford's plantation. The register was started by Thomas' niece-in-law, Sallie, and continued by an unknown source after her death in 1867. A few names are crossed out to indicate their deaths.

Birth dates range from 1802 to 1876 and appear to be grouped by parent as follows: Ben's children Caroline, Levinia, Julia, Linda, and Andrew; Pheba's children Eliss, Ned, Manerva, Christella, Georgian, Lucilla, and Martha; Mannerva's son Willis; Pansy's children Edd West and Spenser; Emma's children Peter, Mary, Anna, Ellen, Martin[?], Barlow, James, Barnnard[?], and James Roberson; Sarah's children Susan, Daniel, Charles, Bitha, Lawrence, Wilz, Betsy, Alfred, Walter, Eli, Samson, Kirby, Isum, and Ruben; unidentified children Joshua, Eliza, Jackson, Washington, Ailcy, Mancy, James, Decent[?], Anderson, Dennis, Louisa, Sam, Sealz[?], Sarah Ella, and Guy.

Another section includes the birth dates of the following 32 people: Ceazor, Cary, Jane, Edmond, Ralph, Anthony, Nelson, Maria, Lewis, Nancy, Patience, Melicy, Richmond, Harris, Rozella, Gilbert, Wilson, George, Wallace, Ambrose, Berk, Lucy, David, Linton, Bettie (Lucie's child), Joseph, Margaret, Robert, Zeah, Mag Kitsy[?], and twins Thomas and Henrietta.

Also included in the journal is an account of winter cloths provided to several enslaved persons, primarily shirts, pants, and dresses. Some of the names listed are duplicates from the birth record, however, others are unique. The 23 names recorded here are: Ceazor, Cary, Shearper[?], Shade, Joshua, John, Dennis, Nelson, Anthony, Lewis, Sally, Sarah, Louisa, Rozella, Eliza, Maryann, Pheba, Caroline, Susan, Maria, Margaret, Patience, and Lety.
