Biographical/Historical:     The Dowling and Rutgers store was a partnership between merchants Joseph Dowling, Edward Rutgers, and a third, silent partner, Robert H. Berry. In November 1839, Rutgers asked to leave the partnership, and the name of the firm changed to Berry and Dowling. The business appears to have folded shortly after, because their stock went up for auction in 1842.
Summary:     The single-item collection contains a Dowling and Rutgers store ledger containing accounts for members of many pioneer families of Tallahassee, including the Chaires, Randolph, Duval, Moseley, and Murat families. Each customer's account lists the items purchased, amount owed, and the dates of each transaction.
