Biographical/Historical:     William Dunnington Bloxham was born in Leon County, Florida, on July 9, 1835. He attended William and Mary College in Virginia and graduated in 1855 with a law degree. In 1860, Bloxham was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he entered the Army and commanded a Leon County Company but never saw active service. In 1870, he was elected to the vacated post of Lieutenant Governor but the State Canvassing Board ruled his election invalid. He then served as a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee until Governor Drew appointed him Secretary of State in 1876.

    Bloxham won the gubernatorial election of 1880, and in 1885 he became U.S. Surveyor General for the District of Florida, a position that allowed him to remain active in state politics. In 1890, Governor Fleming appointed him State Comptroller. Bloxham was elected for a second term as governor in 1896. In 1904, Bloxham's first wife, Mary Davis, died. Soon after, he married Gertrude Morris Norvell, with whom he lived in Tallahassee until his death in 1911.
Summary:     This collection includes photographs, letters, scrapbooks and other memorabilia that belonged to Governor Bloxham. Most items post-date his second term as governor. Also included are photographs and letters of his second wife, Gertrude Norvell, as well as some of her business correspondence, which extends from 1907 to 1935. Some of the photographs feature the Bloxham House in Tallahassee.
