Daniel Robert "Bob" Graham was the thirty-eighth Governor of Florida, serving two terms from January 2, 1979 to January 3, 1987. Prior to his tenure as Governor, Graham represented Dade County in the Florida House of Representatives in 1966 and then in the State Senate in 1970. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1986.
During his term in the Florida House, Graham served on several committees and sub-committees, including ad valorem taxation, appropriations, higher education, local government and the House Constitution Revision Review. His primary legislative interests were long-range planning, program budgeting, higher education finance, revenue sharing and the Milk Commission.
Summary:
The collection consists of the papers of Representative Bob Graham of the 105th District, Dade County, Florida. It includes correspondence, subject files, bill files, editorials, reports, publications, and constitutional revision files. The collection also includes a group photograph of new representatives, including Graham, a certificate of election and miscellaneous printed matter relevant to Graham's special legislative and Dade County interests.
The correspondence includes letters to and from Dade County, state agency and university officials, and a variety of organizations, including the League of Women Voters, Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Legislative Reference Bureau. The subject files include such topics as constitutional revision, Dade County political and legislative matters, Dade House Delegation records, education reports, state revenues and ad valorem tax assessment. The bill files include the House and Senate bills that Graham introduced, or in which he had committee or personal interest.
The constitutional revision files contain assignments for the preparation of drafts of articles and amendments for a new constitution, adopted in 1968. Graham's assignments included articles relating to apportionment, local government, bonds and taxation, public school funds and school bonds.
