Biographical/Historical:     Charles Bundick West and his wife Zipporah were pioneers of Leon County, moving from Virginia in 1827 and starting a successful farm north of Tallahassee. Their son Theophilus later established himself as a well-reputed physician and druggist in Jackson County. Dr. West's career spanned the fields of medicine, teaching and farming. He enlisted in Company E, 8th Florida Infantry of the Confederate States Army and was appointed assistant surgeon. He accompanied his regiment to Northern Virginia, where he served out the war.

After the Civil War, Dr. West returned to Jackson County and started anew at his plantation near Marianna and resumed his medical practice. In 1872, he moved to Marianna and opened the city's first drug store. In 1877, Governor Drew appointed him to the Jackson County School Board, on which he served for about fifteen years. After the death of his first wife in 1901, he married Annie Slade of Columbus, Georgia, with whom he had two sons. Their house in Marianna, the Slade West House, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Summary:     The collection contains microfilmed copies of various papers of the Charles B. West family of Jackson County, Florida. It includes deeds, land grants, tax notices, seizure of property notices and a Confederate bond. Of interest is a Civil War letter from Dr. Theophilus West, at a camp near Brandy Station, to his sister, Mrs. A.M. Watson, in Marianna.
